Strong period decrease in the Mira star S Sex: a possible helium-shell flash
نویسندگان
چکیده
Analysis of visual observations of the Mira-type variable star S Sex showed that the period of pulsation has decreased strongly since 1984 from 264.8 days to 249.4 days. The cycle length variations were tested by the method of contingency tables and by the span test, so that random or accumulative errors in the period variation were excluded. Our results are in good agreement with the theoretical models that suggest period decreases due to a flash in the helium-burning shell. The great rate of period change shown by S Sex suggests that this Mira star may now be in an immediate post primary helium-shell flash state.

Freshly ionized matter around the final Helium shell flash object V 4334 Sgr ( Sakurai ’ s object
We report on the discovery of recently ionized hydrogen-deficient gas in the immediate circumstellar environment of the final helium shell flash star V4334 Sgr (Sakurai’s object). On spectra obtained with FORS2 multi-object spectroscopy we have found spatially extended (∼2) emission from [N II], [O I], [O II] and very faint Hα and [S II]. In the [N II] (λλ6548,83) lines we have identified two c...
متن کاملNucleosynthesis in Intermediate-Mass Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars
We summarise the main properties of Asymptotic Giant Branch stars, including their structure, evolution and nucleosynthesis. The main physical mechanisms are outlined, as are the uncertainties. In keeping with the multi-disciplinary nature of this meeting, this paper is designed for those who are not experts in stellar structure. 1 What Is An AGB Star? Most stars will pass through the Asymptoti...
متن کاملR Centauri: An Unusual Mira Variable in a He-Shell Flash
We present an analysis of AAVSO visual observations of the Mira variable R Cen from 1918 to 2000. The period of the dominant mode has been steadily decreasing from 550 days at JD 2,434,000 (1951) to its present value of 505–510 days. In the same interval, the pulsational amplitude has decreased by 3 mag, from 5.5–11.8 V to 6.3–9.1 V. We suggest that both are caused by a He-shell flash, as the p...
متن کامل“Real-Time” Evolution in Mira Variables
After a brief review of our current understanding of Miras and their evolutionary status, three aspects of “real-time” evolution in these and related stars are examined: • Chemical changes (O-rich to C-rich) due to third dredge-up • Period changes due to the effects of the helium-shell flash • The existence of “fossil” dust and gas shells. Studies of resolved gas and dust shells are highlighted...
متن کاملInward Propagation of Nuclear-Burning Shells in Merging C-O and He White Dwarfs
We have investigated the consequences of merging double white dwarf systems by calculating evolutionary models of accreting white dwarfs. We have considered two cases; a massive C-O white dwarf of∼ 1M⊙ accreting C-O mixture, and a low mass white dwarf with an initial mass of 0.4M⊙ accreting matter composed mostly of helium. The accretion rate of the C-O white dwarf is assumed to be 1 × 10M⊙y . ...
